Supplementation

A dietary supplement, also known as food supplement or nutritional supplement, is a preparation intended to supply nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, fatty acids or amino acids that are missing or are not consumed in sufficient quantity in a person's diet. Vitamins and minerals are substances your body needs in small but steady amounts for normal growth, function and health.

The average diet contains too much saturated fat and simple carbohydrates, elements that can lead to heart disease, obesity and other serious conditions. There is scientific research on the relationship between vitamins and certain diseases. The researchers located many studies that prove taking folic acid during pregnancy helps prevent certain birth defects. Magnesium is an important mineral that promotes the healthy functioning of our body. Regarding the intake of vitamin E, the researchers located evidence that it is an important antioxidant necessary for immune function. They also found that vitamin E has a role in the prevention of heart disease and prostate cancer in some people. Vitamin D and its relation to bone mass appeared in the review as well as supportive evidence for the value of vitamins B6 and B12. We are not receiving enough vitamins from our diets; Vitamin B-12 deficiency can also result in increased levels of homocysteine in the body. Homocysteine is an amino acid that when in high levels can have a toxic effect on the body. This is an important issue because as many as 40% of the people diagnosed with heart disease have elevated levels of homocysteine in their blood.

Vitamin E and C Together at High Doses Reduce the Risk of Alzheimer’s Disease. Vitamin and Antioxidant Combination Reduces Risk of Heart Disease and Stroke.. The link between omega-3 fatty acids and Cardio Vascular Disease risk reduction are still being studied, but research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids have th following effects:

  • decrease risk of arrhythmias, which can lead to sudden cardiac death
  • decrease triglyceride levels
  • decrease growth rate of atherosclerotic plaque
  • lower blood pressure (slightly)

Vitamins act as powerful preventative measures against disease and the aging process, not to mention their critical function for healthy living.

Why do we need Supplements?
We need nutritional supplements because we don't hunt for or gather wild foods anymore, and we live in a toxic world under a lot of stress. Our depleted diets cause 92 percent of us to be deficient in the minimum amount of nutrients needed for optimal brain function. Vitamins and minerals run the chemical reactions in our body and brain that makes happy-mood chemicals, cool inflammation, help us detoxify, make energy and more. So take a daily multivitamin with a meal.
